I know it feels like you’ll never get everything done. You start on your “to-do” list for the day, and something interrupts it. Or you finally complete your list, only to start over with more the next day.
And at the end of the day, you wonder (if you even have time to think), “What is this even for?”
I get it. All those expectations, along with personal responsibilities that never end, can take their toll. It can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

Why am I so stressed?
Maybe you love your job, or at least it’s what you thought you did. On paper, everything is fine. But it sure doesn’t feel like it.
Stress happens when you feel like you have more to deal with than you can handle. By definition, it causes physical changes in the body. Sometimes people don’t realize they’re stressed until it all comes crashing down.
Sometimes we get stressed because we have too much to do. But preventing stress can also be about confidence and trusting yourself. It can be about making choices to prioritize what’s important to you, even if you think you will feel guilty about it.

I’ve found that a holistic approach works best to decrease chronic stress, so we can treat it from multiple angles. Here’s a look at each.
Internal
I teach mindfulness techniques and polyvagal strategies to help you relax. With some practice, you can actually calm your body and nervous system. Not only can this help with stress management, but it often improves anxiety as well.
External
Sometimes stress isn’t as much about how you cope, but about the situation that you’re in. Your job may not light you up as much as it could. Perhaps you’re expected to do too much for too little. (Or you expect that
of yourself.) We’ll take a look at your environment, and I’ll help you set goals for small or big changes.
Relational
Who knew work would be so much about relationships? I’ll help you deal with any toxic or problematic bosses, co-workers, or clients. I often teach skills from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help you get along more easily with difficult people. We’ll also work on building your support network, both professionally and personally, so you feel less alone and more secure.

What happens when you ignore stress?
There’s a lot of focus on weight, diet, exercise and related behaviors when it comes to physical health. But research shows that our personal lives, how we cope, and our relationships are just as important to our physical health as our weight or diet. In some cases, they may be more important.
Possible consequences of ongoing stress include (Yaribeygi, et al., 2017):
- Shrinking of the brain
- Problems with concentration and memory
- Depression and mood struggles
- Suppressed immune system
- Increased blood pressure and cardiovascular problems
- Gastrointestinal problems

What are the benefits of stress management therapy?
It’s normal to have some amount of stress. No one gets rid of it completely. However, it also shouldn’t be so chronic that it decreases your quality of life or affects your mental or physical health.
By putting new strategies into place, such as mindfulness, improved coping skills, and changes to your personal and professional life, you can see a significant improvement.
